Trekking amidst the lush vegetation of Punta Ala and Castiglione della Pescaia

When the weather brightens up, many people love to be out and about in the open air where nature is at its most authentic. The area around Castiglione della Pescaia and Punta Ala offers numerous opportunities to discover less well-known areas on foot with a choice between the sea and the mountains. Fascinating landscapes will open up before your very eyes, from the Mediterranean maquis stretching from the coastline to the hills that frame the panorama, to the dense woods of oak, cork oak, holm oak and chestnut trees overlooking the interior. Diaccia Botrona is an impressive wetland, where you can spot pink flamingos on its waters or admire the flight of a bird of prey.

Three graded trekking itineraries: from easy to challenging

It's not always easy to find the right path for you. We have selected three hikes from the tourist board website www.castiglionepescaia.it, both along the coast and inland, with three levels of difficulty and times. It's your choice, so enjoy your walk!

1. Itinerary for a walk: Litorale Le Marze – Pineta del Tombolo – Fiumara
Grade: easy
Recommended time of year: all year round
Distance: approx. 16 km round trip

A flat path will take you along the shore to discover the pine wood of Pineta del Tombolo, with its lush vegetation of stone pines and maritime pines and a dense undergrowth of Mediterranean maquis consisting of holm oak, sessile oak and cork oak trees. If you’re lucky, you may spot some of the animals living in this pine wood, such as the fox, the porcupine, the native red squirrel and the badger.

2. Itinerary in Maremma: Eremo di Malavalle – Poggio Quercetona – Poggio Petriccio

PATH A: SAN GUGLIELMO

Grade: easy
Gradient: 200 m - easy
Distance: approx. 2 km round trip

PATH B: POGGIO QUERCETONA

Grade: challenging
Gradient: 460 m
Distance: approx. 4 km

PATH C: POGGIO PETRICCIO

Grade: challenging
Gradient: 420 m
Distance: approx. 3.2 km

Follow the municipal road to Poggetto as far as Località Val di Loro and from here, follow the signs for L’Eremo [the Hermitage], where you’ll have a choice of three paths: A, B, C.
Path C is suitable for expert walkers: it will take you to Poggio Petriccio, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea.

3. Trekking itinerary in Maremma: Castellaccio Prile – Poggio Rossini – Poggio Ballone

Grade: challenging
Paths: unmarked
Distance: approx. 12 km round trip

From Palazzo Prile, follow an itinerary completely immersed in nature. The typical, increasingly entangled Mediterranean maquis consists of rockroses, broom and holm oaks that envelop you as you work your way up. When you reach the summit of Poggio Ballone, you'll be rewarded with a splendid view.
