Yacht Club Punta Ala: a special story

The Yacht Club Punta Ala is a not-for-profit sports association founded im 1976. The club is based at the Marina in Il Porto. Patrizio Bertelli's idea to issue a challenge in the America's Cup began in 1997 in the Milan studio of naval architect, German Frérs. Punta Ala was chosen as the team's Italian base, where the sea and wind conditions were similar to those in the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand, where the regattas were staged. On 21 April 1997, the President of the Yacht Club Punta Ala, Bruno Calandriello, threw down the gauntlet to the America's Cup holder, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. In 1999, the first new ITA 45 hull was constructed in a shipyard in Grosseto. The new yacht was launched in Punta Ala on 5 May 1999, named by Miuccia Prada with the priest, Don Sandro Spinelli, holding the ceremony.
The name chosen was Luna Rossa. According to the official story, Patrizio Bertelli was inspired by the large full moon rising tinged with red on a summer's evening in the Tirli hills near Punta Ala. Miuccia Prada agreed that the name Luna Rossa was the perfect contrast to the defender’s name, Black Magic. It was only later that someone remembered the homonymous Neapolitan song written in 1950 by Vian and De Crescenzo, and the modern reinterpretation by Renzo Arbore accompanied the yacht on its adventures.
